Streams and Rivers
Upper-Sac Test your angling skills on any of several hundred miles of stream and river sections supporting wild trout, including officially designated wild trout sections of the Upper Klamath River and the McCloud River. One of your best opportunities for wild fish is on the Upper Sacramento River between Mt. Shasta and Shasta Lake, where you can cast for wild trout under zero limit, catch-and-release angling rules along 32 beautiful miles of waterway. Click here for a list of Upper Sacramento River Access Points to print and bring with you.

The Klamath River is a great choice for fall-run king salmon, also known a Chinook, in the 10 to 12 pound class, but often up to 25 lbs. There is also a healthy steelhead run. Your September-October visit will coincide with upstream migration of these strong anadromous fish as they head for spawning grounds. The upper Klamath River around Yreka boasts fantastic trout fishing in late spring and summer months.

Throughout the season, the smaller streams of Siskiyou County offer unforgettable fishing adventures. Check with the ranger stations and sporting goods stores throughout the county for local tips and access points. The Salmon River and Scott River also offer a chance to try late fall fishing in beautiful settings. Visit the Iron Gate Fish Hatchery on the Upper Klamath, where workers collect millions of eggs for hatching....the Irongate information number is 530-475-3420.
  • Find great information for the Lower McCloud, Upper McCloud, Upper Sacramento on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest Rivers web page.
  • An Area Fishing Report is mantained by The Tackle Shop in Yreka...good Klamath River information as well as lakes and waterways countywide.
  • And the Fishing Reports at SC Guide Service are great for Klamath River, as well as popular lakes and waters in the northern California area.
  • The Upper Sacramento River Exchange at 530-235-2012 can provide information about the Upper Sacramento River through Dunsmuir. Stop by their offices in Dunsmuir to view watershed history and ecology displays, learn about river conservation efforts and how your support can help.
  • Find information on the Klamath River, Salmon River, Scott River, and their tributary creeks including Clear Creek, Elk Creek, Ukonom Creek and Indian Creek at the Klamath National Forest River Info Center.
  • The WebLog at Jack Trout's site provides some mighty fine reading and photos of fishing adventures from Jack's guide service.
  • The ShastaCascade web site offers a Northern California Weekly Fishing Report which includes many of the lakes and rivers in Siskiyou County.
Lakes and Reservoirs
trout More than 180 high elevation and wilderness lakes provide fishing for rainbow, brook and brown trout, thanks to annyal aerial plants of fingerling fish by the Department of Fish and Game. Most of the 89 lakes in the Marble Mountains Wilderness Area are stocked with rainbow, brown and brook trout.

Or drive to one of the 30 lakes in the county with easy access. These include Copco Lake, Iron gate Reservoir, Meiss Lake, McCloud Reservoir, Lake Shastina and Lake Siskiyou. Sport-sized trout are ready to catch from spring to fall, with a large variety of other fish. Two lakes, Juanita Lake off Highway 97 near Macdoel, and Kangaroo Lake off Highway 3 east of Callahan, offer wheelchair fishing access.
  • The Shasta-Trinity National Forest web site offers abundant information on Lowland Lakes and Reservoirs, and Alpine Lakes ("We have so many, we can't list them all here!.")
  • Check out a great Lake Siskiyou fishing map at The Fish Sniffer Online web site. This lake is fantastic and fishing is good in season. Troll the shallow water south of north shore beach for Brook Trout 12" - 14". Castle and Scott Creek coves produce Rainbows to 18". Bank fishermen are using power bait or nite crawlers on the bottom. Feel free to phone Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort (530) 926-2610 for current conditions.
  • Fishing the deep waters of McCloud Reservoir is always a great adventure. Rainbow Trout 12" - 16" are common. Troll Dodger with crawlers or lures. Banks top choices are night crawlers and power bait.
  • Lake Shastina has become quite the bass fishery with anglers using all methods to take them. Fisherman with standard gear get 4 to 5 pound bass on spinner bait, top water poppers and rubber worms. Fly fisherman find some nice bass early morning stripping wooley buggers or leech patterns. Blue gill and crappie will also hit top water. Some big trout move by the river mouth and there have been reports of 24 to 30 inch trout hitting a rapala or lures. Noted for it's windy conditions, Lake Shastina can also be calm in the mornings.
  • Find information about Copco Lake and Iron Gate Reservoir at the California Department of Water Resources web site, including receation, camping, hunting and fishing.
  • Lots of lake information and online lake maps at www.FishersNet.com, including Iron Gate Reservoir, Juanita lake, McCloud Reservoir, Medicine Lake, Lake Shastina, and Lake Siskiyou.
