Maps, tour descriptions, activities and featured merchants provide you with detailed information and resources for your northern California visit. The guide can be pcked up at visitor centers and dozens of handy locations once you arrive, or you may click here to view (and print if you wish) the complete guidebook in pdf format....it's a large 2.8MB file, and recommended for folks with broadband Internet connection.

  • The Museums of Siskiyou County are a great source of historic treasure...visit the Dunsmuir Museum in Dunsmuir, Fort Jones Museum in Fort Jones, Heritage Junction of McCloud Historic Center in McCloud, Sisson Museum in Mount Shasta, the Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum in Weed, Klamath National Forest Interpretive Museum in Yreka, the main Siskiyou County Museum in Yreka, Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair-Museum of Local History in Tulelake, and the Native Daughters of the Golden West Museum in Etna.   • Yreka Historic Tour Plan your visit with lots of activities on foot or by bicycle to cut down on the amount of gas used on your vacation to Siskiyou County. This guide highlights the historic aspects of Yreka, originally a Gold Rush town. Learn about touring Yreka's points of interest in our Yreka Touring Guide, a 2-page pdf file to read and also print, if you wish, to bring along on your visit.

  • Visitors seeking information on their own family roots will find helpful resources at these websites:
    • Siskiyou County Schools History, photographs, histories and records on county school history.
    • Siskiyou Cemeteries Online, indexing the stones and markers of cemeteries in the county.
    • Newspaper and Local History Databases from the Siskiyou County Library - searches The Siskiyou County Obituary Index 1854 to the present, and the Siskiyou Historical Society's annual Siskiyou Pioneer Yearbooks. Does not display the articles, but lets you know where to go in library archives to find specific stories.
    • The Quarters (Lincoln Heights) in Weed, Siskiyou County from A History of Black Americans in California on the National Park Service web site.
    • The history of the Tule Lake Homesteaders, the Klamath Project and settlers in the Tule Lake basin.

  • Visit the site of the Tule Lake Internment Camp. Tule Lake was the largest and most controversial of the ten War Relocation Authority WRA camps used to carry out the government's system of exclusion and detention of persons of Japanese descent during World War II. There are pilgrimages by groups, including the original detainees and their families, as well as individual visits to the site near Tulelake in Northeastern Siskiyou County.

  • The People's Center is the Museum and Cultural Center of the Karuk Tribe of California is a 5,000 square foot facility that includes an exhibition gallery, a gift shop, a basketweaving classroom, a library, a collections storage area and the Karuk Language Program Office. Visitors are welcome Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 6pm in Happy Camp, western Siskiyou County.

  • Visit the McCloud River Mercantile Company Hotel. This nationally registered historic mercantile brings to life the feel of 1897 when it was originally built. The beautifully renovated building is filled with charming shops, galleries and lodging. Discover a gift with history behind it, like toothpaste and mouthwash that Mark Twain and King Louis XV used or George Washington's favorite cologne. You will also find an olde tyme candy shoppe offering saltwater taffy, 'penny candy', Walnettos, Mary Janes and Skybars.

  • The Yreka Western Railroad runs between Yreka and Montague. Check the YWRR website for schedule information on Blue Goose excursion rides and special events on the steam locomotive...a certain treat for visitors to the area! Enthusiasts board the train mid-morning at the depot east of the central Yreka I-5 exit for the hour long ride through beautiful Shasta Valley. There is plenty of time for lunch and a stroll through historic Montague before boarding the train for the trip back to Yreka. Come early to have time to enjoy the extensive model train display at the Yreka Depot.

  • If you are interested in sleeping in a caboose and dining in a rail car, enjoy a visit at Railroad Park a few miles south of Dunsmuir. Built in a loose circle surrounding the resort's swimming pool, deck and spa, the Caboose Motel is steeped in railroad lore. Once proudly coupled behind the freight trains of such legendary carriers as the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and Great Northern, these renovated cabooses now afford visitors the unique opportunity to sample the life of a railroader without sacrificing the comforts of today. Great fun for families, and a special treat for couples!
